El cordero de Isaías es una obra que pertenece al ciclo de autos sacramentales de Pedro Calderón de la Barca, uno de los más prominentes dramaturgos del Siglo de Oro español. La obra se centra en la travesía espiritual de la reina etíope Candaces y su favorito Behomud, quienes se ven impulsados a cuestionar su mundo y su fe a raíz de los fenómenos sobrenaturales que acompañan la muerte de Cristo y la instauración de la Ley de Gracia.
En al inicio de la obra, los personajes se encuentran en medio del caos y el terror provocados por un terremoto, símbolo de la convulsión cósmica que la muerte de Cristo genera. Candaces y Behomud claman al cielo por misericordia y se interrogan mutuamente sobre el significado de los eventos cataclísmicos que están viviendo.
Una de las fortalezas de la obra es cómo Calderón de la Barca utiliza este escenario apocalíptico para indagar en las dudas más profundas que asaltan a la humanidad cuando se enfrenta a lo inexplicable o divino. Los personajes experimentan temor, y una intensa necesidad de entender el orden cósmico y su lugar en él.
Behomud, descrito como el "humano oráculo de sus ciencias", se convierte en un contrapunto filosófico y teológico para Candaces. Ambos buscan respuestas, y en su búsqueda, la obra plantea preguntas sobre la naturaleza del sufrimiento, la presencia o ausencia de Dios en momentos de crisis, y la posibilidad de redención y gracia.
En esta obra Calderón de la Barca emplea un lenguaje poético y cargado de simbolismo. Los diálogos están imbuidos de una profunda emoción y complejidad teológica, reflejando la tormenta interna y externa que los personajes están experimentando.
