En la Biblia, la historia de Moisés comienza a contarse en el capítulo 2 del libro del Éxodo. Nació cuando los hebreos fueron esclavizados en Egipto. Colocado en una canasta para escapar de la muerte prometida por el Faraón a todos los hijos varones del pueblo hebreo, fue acogido por la hija de este último y se le dio el nombre de "Moisés" porque había sido salvado de las aguas.

Sin embargo, según Rochester, la historia es (bastante) diferente.

Además de no ser la hija del faraón, la princesa Thermutis en realidad sería su hermana. Y Moisés no era el hijo de Jocabed, sino el resultado de un amor prohibido entre Thermutis y un esclavo hebreo, asesinado por Mernephtha. Cuando vio que estaba embarazada, la princesa se aisló para tener al niño, y cuando nació, se vio obligada a meterlo en una canasta y dejarlo en el río Nilo. El "encuentro" y la "adopción" habría sido un acto para engañar al faraón.

La segunda narración está hecha por un joven egipcio, Pinehas. Un mago iniciado por Enoc, un hebreo amigo de su madre, en un templo donde estudió los misterios egipcios, Pinehas narra su propia vida y las intersecciones que tuvo con la vida del profeta Moisés.

De hecho, es precisamente la historia de Pinehas la que cuenta el faraón Mernephtah. Se enamora de una noble egipcia, Smaragda, y a lo largo de la obra vemos que ella lo desprecia, y que, por tanto, irá más allá de todos los límites, su amor propio, sus conceptos morales e incluso su respeto por la vida y por muerte.

De hecho, Pinehas ni siquiera respeta a Moisés, a quien describe como un impostor, ya que utilizó las fuerzas de la naturaleza que el profeta habría aprendido a dominar en la India, para asustar a las masas egipcias y obligar al faraón a liberar a los hebreos. Pinehas también cuenta que las plagas egipcias fueron todos hechizos hechos por Moisés, quien, en verdad, soñaba con ser rey del pueblo hebreo. Sin escatimar adjetivos, Pinehas nos presenta un Moisés ambicioso, egoísta, manipulador, vengativo y egocéntrico. Una persona sumamente testaruda y magnética, que no dudó en herir a alguien para cumplir su plan.

La última narración la realiza Necao, soldado del faraón. Amigo de la iniciación de Pinehas, Necho es el único que presenta una visión totalmente egipcia, detallando cómo el pueblo egipcio sufrió las plagas (descritas por Pinehas como meras manipulaciones de las leyes naturales). Necao cuenta toda la saga de la resistencia del faraón a los ataques de Moisés, hasta su llegada al Mar Rojo y el fallido intento de cruzarlo con gran parte del ejército egipcio.
