El Guillermo de Francisco Soria, un dramaturgo mexicano del siglo XVII, es una obra que pertenece al género de la comedia de capa y espada, muy popular en la literatura barroca. La obra se sumerge en las complejidades del honor y la moralidad, temas centrales de este tipo de comedia.

La primera escena arranca con una situación dramática: Arnaldo está a punto de quitarse la vida, sosteniendo un puñal, mientras su criado Chasco intenta detenerlo. La razón detrás del acto desesperado de Arnaldo es la pérdida de amor y honor, ya que se siente abandonado por Leonor. El diálogo entre Arnaldo y Chasco es un juego de contrapuntos emocionales; mientras Arnaldo está sumido en la desesperación, Chasco ofrece un alivio cómico que desafía la gravedad del momento.

Chasco, el criado, se presenta como una figura de la sabiduría popular. Aunque su papel puede parecer secundario, en realidad, ofrece observaciones agudas sobre la naturaleza humana, en especial sobre la inconstancia de las mujeres, que resumen una perspectiva bastante común de la época. Su pragmatismo contrasta con el idealismo romántico de Arnaldo, y este contraste enriquece la dinámica de la obra.

El tema del honor se pone en juego continuamente, no solo en la relación entre Arnaldo y Leonor sino también en cómo estos personajes interactúan con la sociedad en la que viven. En este tipo de obras, el honor no es solo una cuestión personal sino también social, vinculada estrechamente con la identidad y la reputación de los personajes.

Es interesante notar que la obra plantea el dilema moral de Arnaldo de una manera que permite al espectador cuestionar los valores tradicionales del honor y la lealtad. Arnaldo está dispuesto a matar y morir por estos ideales, pero son estos ideales lo suficientemente sólidos como para justificar tales extremos?

El Guillermo es una obra que refleja dilemas de su tiempo, habla del honor, la lealtad y la moralidad a través del lente del drama y la comedia. Su estructura y temática hacen que sea una obra significativa dentro de la tradición de la comedia de capa y espada, ofreciendo una mirada intrigante sobre la cultura y los valores del siglo XVII en México.
