Un individuo aparece muerto en una plaza de la Ciudad de Panamá. Se trata de un indígena anónimo que es llevado a la morgue y que, por una casualidad, se descubre que no tiene ombligo. A partir de ese momento, se inicia una investigación científico-policial tan apasionante como absurda. Los tres protagonistas de esta historia que recorre toda la geografía panameña son personas muy especiales: un inspector de la entonces PTJ (hoy DIJ) que no lograba realizar un operativo exitoso, un profesor de biología expulsado de todos los colegios por tratar de inculcar el "funesto vicio de pensar" en los estudiantes, y un vendedor de enciclopedias físicamente incapaz de mentir- La intención primordial de la novela es mantener el interés del lector, empleando un lenguaje accesible e irónico, desde la visión de un narrador múltiple ("se dice que...", "algunos dicen que... mientras otros afirman que...""aún se comenta que...", "los que lo vieron dicen que..."), con una crítica ácida y como algo cotidiano. Las cosas más inesperadas suceden en cada página, dejando evidente las incongruencias de las situaciones que pueblan nuestra realidad. Bombazos, balaceras, allanamientos ilegales de oficinas, burocracia, entierros y manejo indiscriminado de la informática aparecen a cada página. El choque cultural se explica desde las vivencias de los protagonistas, quienes indagan el origen y las razones por la que existen indios sin ombligo y esta búsqueda sirve de marco a la aproximación de la realidad indígena, de un modo casi festivo. El estilo cinematográfico, la hilación de la historia, la profundidad de los personajes y la creatividad en una novela policíaca de ciencia ficción la hizo ganadora del Premio Nacional de Novela "Ricardo Miró" 2007.
