En los siglos que precedieron a la conquista espanola de 1521, la region centro-norte del estado de Michoacan, occidente de Mexico, fue el escenario de cambios sociopoliticos importantes, materializados a traves de transformaciones significativas en el patron de asentamiento y la cultura material a escala regional. El sitio arqueologico de El Palacio (tambien conocido como La Crucita o Mich. 23), localizado en la cuenca de Zacapu, constituye un centro mayor que fue ocupado entre 850 y 1521 d. C y transformado de manera continua a lo largo de su historia ocupacional. El Palacio atrajo la atencion de diversos investigadores desde finales del siglo diecinueve y fue sujeto a investigaciones subsecuentes. Si bien las intervenciones en el sitio fueron dispersas, estas permitieron documentar ciertos cambios en la morfologia del asentamiento, su funcion, y su grado de integracion en las redes de interaccion culturales a larga distancia. El presente volumen constituye la primera publicacion monografica sobre El Palacio. Se compone de once contribuciones enfocadas tanto en la reevaluacion de la informacion existente del sitio (obtenida entre los anos 1896 y 1995) como en el estudio de los datos adquiridos durante las investigaciones recientes (de 2012 a 2017). La revision y analisis sistematico de la cronoestratigrafia, la cultura material, el urbanismo, y las practicas rituales y economicas que caracterizan la ocupacion prehispanica del sitio, produjeron una documentacion que permite discutir el papel de El Palacio y su contexto de desarrollo en una escala local y regional. El presente volumen ofrece, asimismo, un contenido con material extensivo util para ser retomado en estudios comparativos, sobre todo con respecto a las regiones Oeste, Noroeste y Central de Mexico durante los periodos Epiclasico y Postclasico. Finalmente esta obra contribuye a generar una reflexion en torno a la identificacion de los mecanismos sociales complejos que entran en juego durante la emergencia, transformacion y desintegracion de los centros urbanos premodernos.
Forest, Marion: - Marion Forest received her PhD in archaeology from the University Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Anthropology of Brigham Young University. She specializes in urbanization processes in western and central Mexico. Her current research includes a survey and excavation field project at Teotihuacan and further developments in the integration of LiDAR data in archaeology.
