Grande y muy envidiable merito es este; pero no llega, ni con mucho, al del autor que produce algo, no fuera de moda, sino superior a la moda y que ha de persistir cuando la moda pase, porque toda moda ha de autorizarse y justificarse, comprendiendolo en vez de desecharlo. Asi los clasicistas del siglo del renacimiento y del de Luis XIV ponian a Homero a la cabeza de los clasicos. Vino luego el romanticismo y declaro romantico a Homero. Y yo no dudo que los mas acerrimos naturalistas del dia dejen de citar la Iliada, como dechado y modelo del mas admirable naturalismo. El busilis, pues, y el toque magistral de cualquier obra de amena literatura no esta en seguir la moda, sino en dar la moda o mas bien en ponerse tan por cima de la moda y tan por cima de progresos y de mudanzas, que toda moda nueva se apoye y se autorice en aquella obra presentandola como dechado y tratando de convencer al publico de la excelencia de lo nuevo, no por su discrepancia, sino por su semejanza con aquel modelo inmortal. Que haya obras de esta clase en el dia y cuales sean, es lo que yo no me atrevere a decidir. La sentencia es ardua. La posteridad la dictara sin duda.
