In der vorliegenden vierten Auflage ist die Quantisierung des elektromagnetischen Feldes hinzugekommen.

Dietmar Petrascheck hat an der Universität Wien Physik studiert und dort promoviert. 1987 hat er an der Universität Linz habilitiert und ist seit 1997 ao. Professor. Er forschte u. a. am ILL in Grenoble, an der KFA Jülich und am Atominstitut in Wien, wobei seine Arbeitsgebiete Festkörperphysik, Neutronenstreuung und Neutronenoptik sind.

Franz Schwabl war Ordinarius für Theoretische Physik an der TU München und wurde 2003 emeritiert. Er forschte auf dem Gebiet magnetischer Materialien und untersuchte die Strukturbildung in getriebenen, dissipativen Nichtgleichgewichtssystemen. Er verfasste u. a. auch sehr bekannte Lehrbücher zur Quantenmechanik und Statistischen Mechanik.
