Dabei beziehen sich diese Erfahrungen nicht nur auf die Durch- fUhrung elektronenmikroskopischer Priiparationen und Anfertigen von Aufnah- men am Elektronenmikroskop, sondern sie schlieBen auch den diesen Tiitigkeiten vorangehenden und nachfolgenden Denk-ProzeB mit ein: Das Erkennen echter Aufgaben fUr die Elektronenmikroskopie, die Interpretation der elektronen- mikroskopischen Aufnahmen und die Kombination der elektronenmikroskopi- schen M6glichkeiten mit anderen MeBmethoden. Diesen ganzen Komplex habe ich in Ermangelung eines besseren oder eindeutigeren Ausdrucks als "elektronen- mikroskopische Methodik" bezeichnet. Bei der Notwendigkeit, wiihrend der Tiitigkeit im Battelle-Institut stets wieder neue Mitarbeiter in das Arbeitsgebiet Elektronenmikroskopie einzufUhren und bei der Aufgabe, Ergebnisse den Institutskollegen oder institutsfremden Auf trag- gebern zu erkliiren, hatte ich laufend Gelegenheit zu erkennen, wo die begrifflichen Schwierigkeiten auch fUr physikalisch Gebildete innerhalb des Komplexes der "elektronenmikroskopischen Methodik" liegen: Sie liegen in der N otwendigkeit, eine elektronenmikroskopische Aufnahme nicht als "Abbildung" eines Objektes, sondern als physikalisches MeBergebnis aufzufassen, wobei ein Hauptproblem darin liegt, daB sich das MeBergebnis fast nie in einfache Zahlenwerte zusammen- lassen liiBt, wie Zeigerausschliige an Voltmeter oder Amperemeter. Kein Maschinen- ingenieur, Chemiker oder Metallkundler wird sich ohne besondere Einweisung oder Erfahrung an die Auswertung einer R6ntgeneinkristallaufnahme heranwagen, auch wenn er vielleicht aufgrund seiner Ausbildung dazu in der Lage sein mtiBte. Aber sowie ein "Bild" vorliegt, werden die ktihnsten Schliisse daraus gezogen.
