Dieses Buch behandelt die wichtigsten Gebiete der Elektronik. Dabei wird besonderer Wert auf verständliche Erklärungen gelegt. Es richtet sich - wie auch schon die Bücher zur Elektrotechnik des selben Autors - besonders an Ingenieurstudenten in nichtelektrotechnischen Studiengängen.

Die Funktion von Halbleiterbauelementen (Dioden, Transistoren) werden unter Ausnutzung von Analogien z.B. zum Wasserkreislauf anschaulich erklärt. Es werden wichtige, grundlegende Anwendungsschaltungen aufgezeigt und erklärt. Weiterhin werden aktuelle Schaltungstechniken zur Ansteuerung von Aktuatoren dargelegt. Aufbauend auf den Grundschaltungen mit Operationsverstärkern wird die Nutzung von OPs in wesentlichen Schaltungen dargestellt (PWM-Schaltungen, Oszillatoren etc.). Nach einer Erklärung der wichtigsten Prinzipien zur Analog/Digitalwandlung wird im letzten Kapitel die Digitaltechnik mit ihren Grundelementen und Grundschaltungen sowie die Rechenregeln der Bool'schen Algebra dargelegt.

Durch den Einsatz von mehr als 100 meist farbigen Darstellungen werden die Zusammenhänge besonders gut verdeutlicht.

Prof. Dr. Günter Schmitz, 1956 geboren in Grevenbroich, hatte schon sehr früh ein Faible für Elektrotechnik. Seine elektrische Eisenbahn rüstete er schon als kleiner Junge mit allerlei Zusatzschaltungen aus.

Nach seinem Abitur studierte er dann konsequenterweise Elektrotechnik (an der RWTH Aachen von 1975 bis 1980). Nach seiner Promotion an der RWTH Aachen im Jahr 1985 leitete er für 10 Jahre die Elektronikentwicklung im Bereich Kfz-Elektronik.

Seiner Leidenschaft, Anderen komplexe Zusammenhänge möglichst anschaulich zu erklären, konnte er während dieser Zeit schon durch Vorlesungen über "Elektronik an Verbrennungsmotoren" bei der RWTH Aachen nachgehen.

1995 erhielt er schließlich einen Ruf an die FH Aachen als Professor für "Elektrotechnik im Maschinenbau." Im Jahr 2000 wechselte er dann inner-halb der FH zum Fachbereich "Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik" wo er das Lehrgebiet "Flugzeugelektrik und -elektronik" vertritt. Außerdem hält er Vorlesungen über Grundlagen der Elektrotechnik, Grundlagen der Elektronik, Intelligente Sensor/Aktorsysteme, Advanced Automotive Electronics und Mechatronic Systems Simulation.

Seine Vorlesungen fasste er in Vorlesungsmanuskripten zusammen, die zunächst nur für die eigenen Studenten gedacht waren. Nachdem die als PDF-Version veröffentlichten Skripte sehr erfolgreich waren, begann er, diese auch als E-books zu veröffentlichen. Bei seinen Werken legt er jeweils großen Wert auf verständliche, nachvollziehbare Erklärungen und Herleitungen (Nacherfinden) von Formeln aus eigenem Nachdenken heraus.
