Elementary Grammar of the Sanskrit Language by Monier Williams is a foundational text designed to introduce students to Sanskrit using a practical and accessible approach. Partly written in Roman script, it presents Sanskrit grammar in a systematic format aligned with the structures of classical languages like Latin and Greek. Williams’s innovative arrangement emphasizes comparative linguistics, making it especially useful for Western learners. The book covers phonology, morphology, syntax, and includes clear examples to aid comprehension. Its pedagogical clarity and cross-linguistic insights have made it a lasting resource in Sanskrit studies and Indo-European philology since its publication in the 19th century

Sir Monier Monier-Williams (1819–1899) was a renowned British orientalist and the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University. A pioneer in Sanskrit and Indo-European linguistics, he authored influential works including An Elementary Grammar of the Sanskrit Language (1846), A Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1899), and A Practical Grammar of the Sanskrit Language (1857). He translated key Hindu texts such as Kālidāsa's Śākuntalā and Vikramorvaśī, and explored Indian religion and philosophy in Hinduism (1877), Brahmanism and Hinduism (1883), and Buddhism (1889). Advocating comparative philology and Christian engagement with Eastern texts, his scholarship significantly shaped Western understanding of Indian culture and language.
