Seit langem bestand die Absicht, den Inhalt der Vorlesungen, die ich seit etlichen Jahren an der Ruhr-Universitat Bochum iiber nachrichtentechnische Systeme halte, in angemessen erweiterter Gestalt als Buch verfiigbar zu machen. Leider hat sich die Ver wirklichung dieses Plans wegen der groBen Fiille anderer Verpflichtungen immer wieder verzogert, und auch jetzt habe ich gegeniiber meinen urspriinglichen Vorstellungen, wie ein solches Buch aussehen sollte, stark zuriickstecken miissen, damit es zumindest in der vorliegenden Fassung erscheinen kann. Es ist zunachst als Begleittext fiir unsere Studenten gedacht; dariiber hinaus soIl es aber auch anderen Interessierten die Moglichkeit bieten, sich mit dem behandelten Stoff vertraut zu machen oder aber aus den Besonderheiten der gewiihlten Darstellung Anregung zu schopfen. Freilich kann man sehr unterschiedlicher Meinung dariiber sein, welche Stoffauswahl fiir eine Vorlesung in unserem Fach am zweckmaBigsten ist. Dies ist auch gut so, denn erst dadurch, daB verschiedene Autoren auch verschiedene Akzente setzen und andere Aspekte betonen und herausstellen, ist es bei der Riesenfiille des heutigen Wissens iiberhaupt moglich, zumindest insgesamt eine etwas groBere Breite zu erreichen. Die hier getrof fene Wahl wurde bestimmt zum einen durch die gegebenen auBeren Beschrankungen und Vorgaben, die aus dem hiesigen Studienplan fiir das Fach Elektrotechnik folgen, zum an deren aber auch durch spezifische Neigungen und Erfahrungen des Autors. Insbesondere sollte angestrebt werden, die eigentlichen Grundlagen auf llloglichst saubere und physika lisch einsichtige Weise darzulegen."
