I fluoruri presenti nell'acqua potabile possono essere benefici o dannosi a seconda della loro concentrazione e della quantità totale ingerita. Un eccesso di fluoro nell'acqua potabile causa fluorosi dentale e/o scheletrica. Gli standard indiani per l'acqua potabile raccomandano una concentrazione di fluoruro accettabile di 1,0 mg/L e una concentrazione di fluoruro ammissibile di 1,5mg/L nelle acque potabili. Per rimuovere la concentrazione di fluoruro dal campione contaminato, sono stati preparati in laboratorio campioni di ossido di ferro, nano particelle di idrossido e acqua contaminata da fluoruro. Durante gli agenti atmosferici e la circolazione dell'acqua nelle rocce e nei terreni, il fluoruro può essere lisciviato e dissolto nelle acque sotterranee e nei gas termali. Il contenuto di fluoro nelle acque sotterranee varia notevolmente a seconda del contesto geologico e del tipo di rocce. I minerali più comuni che contengono fluoro sono la fluorite, l'apatite e i micas.
