Der Anteil der Kinder und Jugendlichen ist in dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe sehr hoch. In der amerikanischen Soziologie sind Migranten schon früh zum Forschungsthema geworden. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses standen Fragen nach der Assimilation und Integration, abweichendem erhalten und ethnischer Identität. In der deutschen Soziologie entstand dieser Forschungsschwerpunkt erst nach der Anwerbung der Gastarbeiter (ab 1955). Auch hier wurden ähnliche Fragen bearbeitet. Die Forschung orientiert sich dabei oft an den kulturellen und politischen Leitbildern westlicher Gesellschaften. (Beispielsweise in wiefern die Eingliederung gelingt.) Auch die Jugendforschung hat sich in den letzten 20 Jahren zunehmend mit ausländischen Jugendlichen beschäftigt. Hier stehen vor allem Problemkonstellationen im Vordergrund. Dabei wird generell von einer strukturellen Benachteiligung und von einer Gefährdung der Identitätsbildung ausgegangen. Die Jugendlichen wachsen zwischen zwei Kulturen auf. Zum Teil müssen sie deshalb mit sehr gegensätzlichen Erwartungen umgehen. Hypothesen gehen von einer hohen Wahrscheinlichkeit für Kulturkonflikte aus. Aber auch Generationenkonflikte scheinen sehr wahrscheinlich, da die Jugendlichen stärker von den Werten des Aufnahmelandes geprägt werden als ihre Eltern. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit stehen die Generationenbeziehungen in türkischen Migrantenfamilien in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Das Ziel ist die Determinanten, die die Eltern-Kind-Beziehungen beeinflussen zu beschreiben.
