About The Book

Ladakh is a region of Jammu and Kashmir state, located in the north of India, mostly characterized by barren lands and snow-clad mountains. The highest road and the highest airfield in the world are located in Ladakh. Post-independence Ladakh consists of the two districts of Leh and Kargil whereas Skardo and Gilgit—which were parts of the pre-independence Ladakh—are now in Pakistan. It is an important region from India’s defence point of view, surrounded by some important nations of Central Asia, and touching the borders of China and Pakistan. The exotic land of Ladakh has been attracting expeditionists, writers, poets, saints and scholars to see its beauty, experience its serenity and study its rich history and culture. Emergence of Islam in Ladakh covers all the essential aspects of the emergence and propagation of Islam in the region. It presents the events chronologically so as to make the readers familiar with the introduction and spread of Islam in Ladakh during the period 15th to 19th century, largely by the invaders, travellers, traders, adventurers, preachers as well as through matrimonial relations. Systematically developed and carefully presented, the book offers a brilliant study on the spread of Islam in Ladakh taking into account contemporary socio-economic condition and political situation. It will be highly useful to the students, teachers and researchers in the field of religious history of Ladakh. Common readers will also find it interesting and informative.

About The Author

Zain-ul-Aabedin Aabedi, M.A. and M.Ed. from Kashmir University, retired as Principal, Boys Higher Secondary School, Leh. During his service he participated in many seminars and workshops and presented papers on history, religion, culture and social life of north India. He also served as Principal of the prestigious Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya for a period of five years. He has written over hundred articles for All India Radio and Doordarshan, Leh. Several of his articles have been published in different magazines, books and national dailies. His poetry in Urdu and Ladakhi on various social, cultural, educational and religious topics is articulate, interesting and impressive. He is also a member of IALS (International Association for Ladakh Studies).
