Die Begegnung der Psychologie mit Schopenhauer und Zen versteht sich als Grundlagenforschung über die Conditio humana und soll theoretische Defizite der Moralpsychologie ausräumen helfen. Mit Schopenhauers Ethik und Zen entsteht für die Psychologie ein interdisziplinär verfremdeter Rahmen, in dem die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Empathie und Moral eine erweiterte Bedeutung gewinnt; die Frage nach moralischer Kompetenz mündet in die Frage nach dem Menschen: Was bin ich? Im Zen verschwindet die Bedeutung des Ich als das Zentrum der Person, und zugleich wird die Trennung von Ich und Nicht-Ich aufgehoben. Für Schopenhauer liegt im Mit-Leiden die Urquelle der Moral. Hier führt Erfahrung von Mitleid zum Nichts und zum Schweigen. Im Zen ist es umgekehrt: Die Erfahrung der Leere führt zum umfassenden Mitgefühl mit allen Wesen. Die Möglichkeit moralischen Handels ist bei Schopenhauer und im Zen als Seinserfahrung der Wesensidentität allen Lebens gegeben: sie ist praktische Mystik. Der andere wird erlebt als die eigene wesenhafte Natur; Mitgefühl wird zu existentiellem Mit-Sein: Wir werden Mensch füreinander.

Der Autor: Roland Wöhrle-Chon studierte Philosophie, Psychologie und Politische Wissenschaft in Bonn, Berlin und Madurai/Südindien. Er arbeitete sieben Jahre als Sozialwissenschaftler an der Seowon University in Chongju/Südkorea.
