Alma Flor Ada nació en Camagüey, Cuba, en la Quinta Simoni, una casa ligada a la gesta independentista del siglo XX, casa histórica que aparece prominentemente en mucha de su creación. Obtuvo un doctorado de la Pontifica Universidad Católica de Lima con un estudio sobre Pedro Salinas gracias al cual recibió, en 1965, un nombramiento como "scholar" en el Radcliffe Institute for Independent Studies de la Universidad de Harvard. En el Perú nacieron sus primeros tres hijos: Rosalma, Alfonso y Miguel Zubizarreta, el cuarto, Gabriel Zubizarreta nació en Boston, Massachusetts. Vive en los Estados Unidos desde 1970. Ha sido profesora de las universidades de Emory [Atlanta], Mercy [Detroit] y la Universidad de San Francisco, de la cual es profesora emérita. Ha sido invitada a dar conferencias y a hablar sobre su obra en numerosos países. Autora prolífica su creación incluye además de dos novelas y un libro de memorias para adultos, un amplio número de libros infantiles que han recibido gran reconocimiento entre muchos otros la Medalla Pura Belpré [de la Asociación de Bibliotecarios de los Estados Unidos], la Medalla de Oro Marta Salotti [Argentina], el Premio OHTLI del gobierno de México por su labor en pro de ciudadanos mexicanos en el exterior, el Premio Virginia Hamilton, por su obra de literatura infantil, el Premio de CABE [Asociación de Educación Bilingüe de California].
