On December 13, 2013, in Centennial, Colorado, yet another tragic school shooting devastated a community. In the wake of the tragedy that ended the life of student Claire Davis, the public went through their typical round of shock, blame, and demand for better laws and heightened school security.

Educator and author Jonathan J. Doll, PhD, on the other hand, set about writing a book that would help schools, districts, and states create a prevention program to diffuse violent thoughts and feelings before they're acted upon.

Approaching the problem pragmatically, Ending School Shootings considers the fact that right now there are students in our schools, from elementary on up, who might later commit a violent act. So, what are we doing to identify them, ground them with a sense of positive purpose, encourage their strengths, and teach them nonviolent problem-solving behaviors? This, rather than a stronger police presence, is the key to stemming the flood of violence that is harming our students.

Jonathan J. Doll, PhD, is an educationalist who advocates for school safety and closing achievement gaps so that all students can experience success. He holds a bachelor's degree in math education from Syracuse University, a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Alaska, and a doctorate of philosophy from Texas A&M University.

A Data Strategist for the State of Michigan, he provides support to low-performing schools and has been appointed as an agency fellow in the Strategic Data Project (SDP) of the Center for Public Policy at Harvard University, where he's involved in a two-year research study on the efficacy of improvements at schools receiving federal stimulus grant funds.
