This textbook focuses on English Language usage and answers many questions such as how to effectively communicate ideas to detect grammatical structures. Here the author has outlined some grammatical rules relating to word class and the often annoying area of subject-verb agreement, which the book has simplified for learners to easily understand. It also gives generous tips on how to keep a consistent tense in our written text and explains how we can use verbs to express tense, voice and mood. Also, we are instructed on how to develop effective writing skills relating to tone, word-choice and their impacts and outlines some golden rules on how to structure our narrative and expository writings. With this book to hand our struggles are all over in terms of how to either format our articles or how to write effective minutes of meetings or even how to incorporate in our letters the sort of content that will produce the most positive impact. Next, it teaches us how to check our written text; making sure that our writing is accurate in terms of spelling, grammar and punctuation. How about the tips on how to effectively read text and optimise marks in our exams based on comprehension? That too is well handled in this book. How about summarising text? Again, this book is superb and in terms of mastering figurative language and how to use phrases and clauses, synonyms and antonyms for effect; this book comes highly recommended. Finally, this book is clearly user friendly as it comes complete with answers to all set exercises so that students can check their progress and teachers can quickly mark set excercises, in addition, there is an appendix which makes cross referencing very easy to do.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Samuel Tamba was born on 9th September, 1959 in Kangama, Kissi Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, Eastern Region of Sierra Leone. He studied at Njala University and his qualifications include: M.A in Descriptive and Applied Linguistics; Bo Campus (2005/2006) Njala University College: 1990-1994, B.A Ed in Geography/Linguistics, Bo Teachers' College: 1981-1984 Teachers' Certificate, Pendembu Vocational Secondary School: 1974-1980; Education Committee School, Kangama: 1967-1974.
His appointments include: Head of Language Studies Department in (2009 ) Head of Department (2009-2018) published many research articles in Peer Review Journals, appointed first Co-ordinator, Kailahun Distance Education Centre; 2020, promoted to Principal Lecturer 2019; Senior Lecturer (2022) at University level. Samuel lectured Language Arts, Communication Skills, Phonetics, and Methodology at the Bunumbu Teachers' College, Kenema (1998-2001) lectured the same courses and Language Studies at the Eastern Polytechnic (2001-2021) until the institution was transformed to the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone in 2021. Samuel also taught at the Ahmadiyya Secondary School in Kenema(1994-1998) Saint Paul's Primary School, Kenema (1988-1990) Saint Charles Lwanga Primary School (1986-1988)and the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Kenema (1984-1986). He is a Catholic Christian, married to Alice Mbalu Tamba (nee-Kargbo), and has three children.
