Ensayo político sobre la isla de Cuba, de Alejandro de Humboldt, es para la historiografía cubana un segundo descubrimiento de la isla. Humboldt afirma en esta obra que buena parte de las costas cubanas no han sido recogidas en mapas precisos. Demuestra, además que por entonces se desconocían las profundidades de sus aguas y las coordenadas geográficas necesitaban ser corregidas. La aproximación de Humboldt a Cuba no es solo de carácter estrictamente científico, no solo se interesa por su fauna, su flora o su geología. Nuestro autor va un paso más allá y analiza también las condiciones socioeconómicas y los factores que pueden contribuir al esplendor o la decadencia de la isla:


En los países donde se han ejecutado grandes operaciones geodésicas, el trazar y redactar un mapa se reduce a una operación gráfica de suma sencillez, y cesan las combinaciones, cuando por una serie no interrumpida de triángulos se han determinado con exactitud las relaciones de distancia y de situación. La geografía de la América dista mucho de aquel estado de perfección, en que no se marcha a tientas y en que no es difícil la elección entre materiales de un valor muy desigual. Una gran parte de las costas (en el norte de Cuba, en Choco, en Guatemala y en México, desde Tehuantepec hasta San Blas) no han sido todavía reconocidas cuidadosamente. Algunas posiciones astronómicas sin conexión pueden únicamente guiar al geógrafo en el interior de las tierras. Cuando tales puntos, suficientemente comparados, se agrupan por sistemas y se reúnen por medio de líneas cronométricas, la certidumbre es mucho mayor, pero para evitar en adelante el inconveniente de variaciones parciales que se intenten acerca de puntos que dependen unos de otros, es indispensable exponer en el análisis de cada mapa la clase de elementos que han servido de base para hacerlo. Así es como en los trabajos que hice en la América meridional, los llanos de Venezuela, el Orinoco, el Casiquiare y el Río Negro forman un solo sistema de oposiciones unido por la transposición del tiempo a Cumaná y a Caracas, cuya posición se funda en observaciones astronómicas absolutas.


Ensayo político sobre la isla de Cuba es también libro clave en el análisis de la esclavitud en el Caribe en la primera mitad del siglo XIX.
