Itäblokkiin toisen maailmansodan jälkeen kuuluneiden Keski- ja Itä-Euroopan maiden moottoripyöräteollisuutta ei kannata vähätellä. Itäblokin aikana kyseiset maat valmistivat massatuotantona oman aikansa tehokkaimpia kaksitahtimoottoripyöriä, joilla saavutettiin lukuisia voittoja luotettavuusajo-, motocross- ja ratamoottoripyörien kilpailuissa. Ennen itäblokin syntyä muun muassa Tshekkoslovakia ja Puola olivat oman aikansa kehittyneimpiä ja joillakin aloilla jopa johtavia raskaan metalliteollisuuden maita Euroopassa. Niissä valmistettiin muun muassa autoja, panssarivaunuja ja moottoripyöriä enemmän kuin mihin 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmenien Venäjä ja Neuvostoliitto olivat kyenneet. Itäblokin valmistamat moottoripyörät ovat Neuvostoliitossa valmistettujen moottoripyörien tapaan merkistä ja mallista riippumatta karujen ja huonojen teiden ja olosuhteiden työjuhtia. Itäblokin moottoripyörät ovat olleet kaikkialla niin myös Suomessa arkielämään ja työhön liittyviä kulkuvälineitä. Niiden merkitys oli suurin ennen kuin autoista tuli jokamiehen kulkuvälineitä. Tässä kirjassa esitellään Bulgarian ja Tshekkoslovakian sekä niitä edeltäneiden valtioiden moottoripyöriä aina 1900-luvun alusta alkaen.

Asko Itkonen aloitti moottoripyöriin ja panssarivaunuihin liittyvien tietokirjojen kirjoittamisen vuonna 2007. Ennen Isien ja isoisien moottoripyörät 1900-1970 kirjaa hän on julkaissut viisi moottoripyöräaiheista ja kolme panssarivaunuaiheista tietokirjaa. Asko Itkosen kiinnostus moottoripyöräilyyn alkoi 1970-luvun alussa ensimmäisen kevytmoottoripyörän hankinnan yhteydessä. Itkonen on harrastanut moottoripyöräilyä ja siihen liittyvää tiedon hankintaa kohta 50 vuotta. Itkosen 30 vuotta kestänyt työhistoria koostuu panssarivaunujen ja -ajoneuvojen sekä monipyörävetoisten ajoneuvojen kouluttamisesta ja kunnossapidon johtamisesta.
