Bedingt durch steigende Rechenleistung und sinkende Produktionskosten, stieg die Verbreitung von Personalcomputern bis auf ca. 300 Millionen verkaufte Einheiten im Jahr 2007. Neben den Standardanwendungen wie Textverarbeitung oder Tabellenkalkulation wird der PC in immer mehr Anwendungsgebieten eingesetzt. Für die unterschiedlichen Einsatzbereiche werden ständig neue Softwareprodukte entwickelt, um Anwender bei ihrer Arbeit in fachspezifischen Gebieten optimal zu unterstützen. Softwareprodukte bilden das Wissen der Hersteller für die Lösung von Aufgaben ab. Um dieses Wissen nutzbar zu machen, muss der Anwender zusätzlich zum Kauf der Software das Know-how über die grundlegenden Funktionen und Abläufe sowie die Bedienung der Produkte erlernen. Die meisten Anwender nutzen für die tägliche Arbeit mehrere Softwareprodukte. Jedes Programm muss erlernt werden und somit steigt mit zunehmender Anzahl der Programme auch der Lernaufwand. Der Lernaufwand übersteigt häufig den Anschaffungspreis und daher müssen Wege gefunden werden, um den Anwender beim Erlernen einer Software besser zu unterstützen. Ein möglicher Weg sind Schulungen, auf denen Anwender die Arbeit mit einer Software trainieren. Diese personalisierten Schulungen sind zeitaufwändig und teuer. Daher wird weltweit an alternativen zeit- und Kosten sparenden Methoden zum effektiven Erstellen, Verteilen und Vermitteln von Know-how gearbeitet. Die Veränderungen im Vertrieb von Softwareprodukten verstärken diesen Trend. Bisher wurden Produkte häufig vom Hersteller über Gro händler (Distributor) und Händler an den Anwender vertrieben. Durch das Internet können Hersteller Informationen effektiv erstellen, veröffentlichen und potentiellen Kunden diese Informationen bereitst
