Seit der Verbreitung des Internets in den 90er Jahren befindet sich der Begriff des Geschäftsmodells im Mittelpunkt vieler Wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen. In der Literatur lassen sich viele unterschiedliche Definitionen finden. Allgemein zeigt ein Geschäftsmodell auf, wie ein Unternehmen Mehrwert für seine Kunden liefert und Einnahmen generiert. Der zunehmende Wettbewerbsdruck und die sich schnell verändernde Umwelt sorgt dafür, dass es für Unternehmen nicht mehr ausreicht sich allein auf die Entwicklung innovativer Produkte zu konzentrieren. Durch die verstärkte Nutzung des Internets entstanden völlig neue Möglichkeiten zur Entwicklung neuer Geschäftsmodelle und kleine internet-basierte Firmen konnten mit gro en traditionellen Firmen in Konkurrenz treten. Ein Beispiel dafür stellt das aus dem Bereich der "Peer to Peer-Geschäftsmodelle" in 2008 gegründete Startup Airbnb dar. Inzwischen wird das Unternehmen von VentureKapital-Firmen mit einem Wert von $31 Milliarden bewertet und ist damit das viert wertvollste digitale Startup der Welt. Airbnb vermietet keine Wohnungen, sondern stellt lediglich eine Plattform zur Verfügung, auf der Kunden ihre eigene Wohnung an andere Privatpersonen vermieten können. Die Finanzierung erfolgt bei Airbnb über eine Servicegebühr, welche bei einer erfolgreichen Vermittlung zwischen dem Konsumenten und dem Anbieter fällig wird.
