Dieser klassische Rahmen brach innerhalb der letzten 50 Jahre, und zunehmend heftig in den letzten Jahrzehnten, auf: Die Biologie all- gemein geriet in eine entscheidende Wandlung, welche den Entwick- lungsphysiologen nicht unberuhrt lassen konnte. Sehr unterschied- liche biologische Disziplinen traten als eigene Forschungszentren hervor und breiteten sich weit aus, wie die Genetik, die Biochemie, die Zytologie mit molekularer Kern- und Protoplasmaforschung. Der Entwicklungsphysiologe, seiner Bestimmung nach gehalten, zur Auf- klarung von Vorgangen der organismischen Entwicklung nicht nur die ihm gerade faBbare Ebene des Keimgeschehens, sondern gleichzeitig dessen Vergangenheit und Zukunft mit in den Blick zu nehmen, er- griff begierig die vielen Moglichkeiten, die diese aufbluhenden Wis- senschaftszweige boten, urn real ins Submikroskopische und Molekulare vorzudringen.
