Bien qu'elle ait été signalée au Mali depuis les années 1900, la leishmaniose cutanée (LC) reste très mal connue. Ainsi, le réservoir de la maladie et les animaux vecteurs demeurent un mystère. Aucune cartographie de la distribution de la LC et ses vecteurs n'ait été faite récemment, car celle disponible actuellement date de 1970. Une collecte des données issues d'études antérieures et des dossiers médicaux compilées au CNAM nous a permis d'étudier la distribution spatiale et temporelle de la LC au Mali sur 22 ans en deux (2) périodes: de 1957 à 1966 (soit 10 ans), puis 1997 à 2008 (soit 12 ans). Le Mali reste endémique de la LC exception faite de la zone désertique. L'incidence nationale est de 5 cas pour 1 million d'habitants entre 1997 et 2008. Les deux (2) régions les plus atteintes sont Kayes et Koulikoro. La maladie semble se déplacer vers le centre du pays depuis une dizaine d'années. Elle est présente en saisons sèche et pluvieuse, la période du mois d'Avril à Septembre est celle des plus fortes contaminations. Les statistiques officielles ne permettent pas d'estimer l'incidence réelle. La LC demeure un important problème de santé publique qui est cependant très négligé.
