""Equality"" is a political novel written by Edward Bellamy, first published in 1897. The story is set in the year 2000, where a utopian society has been established in the United States. The protagonist, Julian West, falls into a deep sleep in 1887 and wakes up in the year 2000 to find that the world has drastically changed. In this new society, there is no money, no poverty, and no social classes. Everyone is equal and works for the common good. The novel explores the concept of socialism and the idea of a planned economy. Bellamy presents a vision of a society where everyone works for the benefit of all, and where individual needs are met through a system of distribution based on equal access to goods and services. The book also touches on issues such as gender equality, education, and the role of government in society.Throughout the novel, Julian West struggles to understand this new world and the principles that govern it. He meets with various characters who explain the workings of the society and the reasons behind its success. The book ends with Julian West returning to his own time, determined to work towards creating a similar society in his own era.""Equality"" is considered a classic of utopian literature and a seminal work in the socialist tradition. It has been praised for its vision of a more just and equitable society and criticized for its idealism and lack of practicality. Nevertheless, it remains a thought-provoking and influential work, inspiring generations of readers to imagine a better world.1897. Bellamy studied law and entered the bar, but never practiced. He was a journalist and social theorist as well as a novelist. Bellamy's theory of public capitalism would greatly affect American political thought in the 20th century. Equality is the sequel to Looking Backward, his utopian novel about a young man who falls asleep in 1887 and wakes in the year 2000 and finds all social ills are solved. This novel begins when Julian West returns to the year 2000 to continue his education. The book describes an ideal society in that year. Equality was published just before his death. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
