Das Grundanliegen des Humanismus ist die Verwirklichung eines idealen Menschentums orientiert an klassischen Vorbildern. Die Ausbildung harmonischer Menschen ausgerichtet nach dem Prinzip des Menschen, wird angestrebt. Nicht der Kosmos oder die Natur, sondern der Mensch gilt als Ma aller Dinge. Somit vertritt der Humanismus einen subjektorientierten Bildungsgedanken, bei welchem die Sprachen (insbesondere das Griechische und das Latein) und die Literatur mit Fokus auf Philosophie und Rhetorik im Zentrum stehen. Der Mensch soll durch Aneignung von Wissen und Tugend dazu befähigt werden, seine wahre Bestimmung zu erkennen. Als Voraussetzung für die Bildung des Menschen gelten Freiheit und Gleichheit aller Menschen. Die Würde des Menschen liegt in seinem freien Willen begründet. Es ist eine explizit menschliche Fähigkeit zu erreichen, was man will. Geburtsdatum und Geburtsort des Erasmus von Rotterdam stehen im Zeichen der Ungewissheit alles Menschlichen. Anzunehmen ist eine auf den 28. Oktober 1466 datierte Geburt in Rotterdam. Das Quellenmaterial in Bezug auf Jugendzeit und Herkunft des Erasmus ist dürftig, da er selbst sich kaum über die eigene Kindheit und Jugend geäu ert hat. Der aktuelle Forschungsstand gründet sich insbesondere auf der Untersuchung von vier unterschiedlichen Quellen.
