Durch die Europäisierung erhöht sich nicht nur die Vergleichbarkeit der Leistungen, sondern auch der Leistungsdruck auf allen Ebenen der Hochschulen, die sich als Non-Profit Organisationen nun ökonomischen Anforderungen gegenüber stehen sehen. Um in Zukunft an diesem Wettbewerb - auch im Hinblick auf die Mittelknappheit im öffentlichen Sektor und die Umwerbung von Spendenmitteln - in möglichst gro em Umfang teilhaben zu können ist es nötig, die eigene Leistung ständig zu verbessern und im Rahmen eines ausgereiften Hochschulmarketings zu kommunizieren. Vorraussetzung dafür sind eine permanente Evaluation der Ist-Leistung sowie Zielvereinbarungen zur Formulierung der Soll-Leistung, auch disaggregiert auf Fakultäts-, Institutions- und Lehrstuhlebene. Ein Vergleich von Soll- und Ist-Leistung lässt auf Effektivität und Effizienz, und damit auf den Erfolg der einzelnen Ebenen schlie en. Im Gegensatz zu Unternehmen lässt sich der Erfolg hier nicht direkt an eindeutig messbaren monetären Grö en ausmachen. Vielmehr helfen qualitative Indikatoren neben Kennzahlen mit quantitativen In-formationen wie Input-, Throughput- und Outputgrö en die finanziellen Grö en zu ersetzen. Diverse Institute, wie z.B. das Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE), versuchen die Qualität von Hochschulen durch Rankings zu messen, veranschaulichen und zu vergleichen. Dabei greifen Sie auf Indikatoren und Kennzahlen zurück, die die Performance in Forschung und Lehre möglichst gut widerspiegeln sollen.
