"Giftig" oder "toxisch" besagt, daB eine zu groBe Menge eines Stof- fes verabreicht oder aufgenommen worden ist, die zu einer Erkran- kung durch "Vergiftung" gefiihrt hat. Es gibt kein Mittel, das an sich ungiftig ist. Eine iibergroBe Menge ei- nes "ungiftigen" Stoffes (z.B. Wasser) kann zu "Vergiftungen" fiih- ren, wiihrend eine arztlich verordnete Menge eines "starken Giftes" (z.B. Digitalis) Heilwirkung haben kann. Allein die Menge (Dosis) einer Substanz macht es aus, ob die Wirkung des Mittels lebensbe- drohlich ("giftig"), unerheblich (nichtgiftig) oder heilend (Arznei) ist. Die Toxikologie ist die Lehre von den Vergiftungen. Viele Erfahrun- gen der Toxikologie griinden sich auf die Beobachtung von Ver- giftungsfiillen. Die auftauchenden Fragestellungen werden in Tier- versuchen erarbeitet und fiihren zu tieferem Verstandnis der bei Ver- giftungen sich abspielenden biologischen Vorgange. Erst aus der Er- kenntnis der Wirkungsweise von "Giften" k6nnen die M6glichkeiten der Behandlung bzw. Gegenmittel (Antidote) entwickelt werden. Die Pharmakologie ist die Lehre von der Wirkung der Arzneimittel (Pharmaka). Auch bei der Gabe von Arzneirnitteln ist stets und grundsiitzlich das Risiko der "Nebenwirkung" bzw. der "unerwiinsch- ten Wirkung" gegeben. Da die Anwendung von Arzneirnitteln zunirnmt und auf Arzneien nicht verzichtet werden kann, wird auch der MiBbrauch, die Oberdosis und damit die Vergiftungsm6glichkeit weiterhin zunehmen. Die irnmer bessere Aufmachung der Publlkumspriiparate durch Wer- bung ist die Ursache von hiiufigeren Vergiftungen mit diesen Haus- haltsmitteln. Besonders gefiihrdet sind Kinder, die gerne aus den hiibschen Fliischchen mit besonders farbenpriichtigem Aufdruck (oft mit Obst und Blumen) trinken.
