Noch bis in die zweite Halfte des vorigen Jahrhunderts wirkten die Vorstellungen nach, die sich aus den Lehren des Altertums ergeben und durch das ganze Mittel- alter behauptet hatten. Wurde doch das Krankheitsbild schon von HIPPo- KRATES und GALEN in treffender Weise geschildert, obwohl ersterer nicht nur vom "Erysipelas" del' Haut, sondern auch von einem solchen innerer Organe spricht und GALEN zwar bereits die scharfe Trennung von del' Phlegmone, aber noch nicht diejenige von allen andersartigen Hautentziindungen voll- zieht. Auch die auf HIPPOKRATES gestiitzte Vorstellung GALENS, daB die Entstehung des Erysipels hauptsachlich auf eine durch krankhafte Leber- funktion bedingte gallige Blutveranderung zuriickzufiihren, dane ben noch von atmospharischen und tellurischen Einfliissen abhangig sei, behauptete sich weit iiber die Zeit hinaus, als bereits der Gedanke an ein Contagium vivum Anhanger gefunden hatte und schon die Rolle niedrigster pflanz- licher Lebewesen als Urheber ansteckender Krankheiten zur Diskussion ge- stellt worden war (HENLE 1840). Noch ein SCHOENLEIN fuBte auf den Lehren GALENS, wenn er auch bereits - wie SYDENHAM und HOFFMAN- das Erysipel den fieberhaften exanthematischen Krankheiten zurechnete und es in der gemeinsamen Gruppe der "Erysipelaceen" dem Zoster, der Urticaria, der Variola und Scarlatina an die Seite stellte.
