Escenas latinoamericanas es una antología de textos de José Martí sobre las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica. En buena parte son artículos suyo de la época del Congreso de Washington, convocado para intentar establecer una moneda única para todo el continente.

Las crónicas de Martí acerca de este acontecimiento revelan las diferentes aristas de un mismo problema. Las difíciles relaciones entre una América pujante y expansiva y otra atrapada por la carencia de industria nacional no permitía un trato igualitario entre ambas. Interesa también la agudeza martiana a la hora de desentrañar los entresijos de este proyecto grandioso y frustrado.

En Escenas latinoamericanas Martí cita a la prensa de su tiempo. Comenta, por ejemplo, quiénes son los propietarios de esos periódicos, qué tendencia política siguen y cómo para conseguir esa moneda única es preciso no incurrir en ingenuidades. Sabe nuestro autor que la prensa tiene también sus intereses. Percibe que, tras la madeja de opiniones circulantes sobre el Congreso de Washington hay también otros intereses.

Cabe añadir que para Martí las relaciones entre las dos Américas pasaban también por un vínculo equilibrado y estrecho con Europa. En particular se refiere sistema financiero de Viejo continente, otro de los poderes que gravita sobre los países del Nuevo Mundo.
