En 1814 Laplace publie Essai philosophique sur les probabilités. Il est le premier à publier la valeur de l'intégrale de Gauss. Il étudie la transformée de Laplace, étude plus tard complétée par Oliver Heaviside. Il formalise la démarche mathématique de la logique par induction basée sur les probabilités, que nous reconnaissons aujourd'hui comme celle de Thomas Bayes. Comme il l'écrit dans l'introduction, il croit fermement au déterminisme causal: Nous devons donc envisager l'état présent de l'univers comme l'effet de son état antérieur et comme la cause de celui qui va suivre. Une intelligence qui, pour un instant donné, connaîtrait toutes les forces dont la nature est animée, et la situation respective des êtres qui la composent, si d'ailleurs elle était assez vaste pour soumettre ces données à l'Analyse, embrasserait dans la même formule les mouvements des plus grands corps de l'univers et ceux du plus léger atome: rien ne serait incertain pour elle et l'avenir, comme le passé serait présent à ses yeux.

Pierre-Simon de Laplace, né Pierre-Simon Laplace, comte Laplace puis 1er marquis de Laplace, né le 23 mars 1749 à Beaumont-en-Auge et mort le 5 mars 1827 à Paris, est un mathématicien, astronome, physicien et homme politique français.
