El presente trabajo plantea dos objetivos generales. El primer objetivo fue estudiar el Estrés Social (ES) y el Estrés Medio Crónico (EMC), a diferentes tiempos de exposición, sobre la conducta, actividad neuroendocrina e inmunitaria. El segundo objetivo fue estudiar el efecto de un fármaco antidepresivo (fluoxetina), administrado durante 4 semanas, sobre los cambios provocados por la aplicación crónica de los dos tipos de estrés. Se realizaron 4 experimentos con ratones OF1 en los que se evaluó la conducta, la actividad serotoninérgica y dopaminérgica hipotalámica, así como los niveles de corticosterona en suero y la respuesta proliferativa de las células esplénicas. De los datos obtenidos se concluye que el ES de diferente duración produce una inmunosupresión. El tratamiento con fluoxetina mejora la conducta, los niveles de corticosterona y protege de la inmunosupresión. El EMC produjo cambios en el condicionamiento de preferencia de lugar (CPL) solo en el grupo de 7 semanas indicativo de aumento de la ansiedad. En general los datos muestran que el ES produce mayor impacto sobre las variables conductuales y biológicas estudiadas que el EMC.
