Existe un uso y abuso cotidiano de la palabra estrés en las conversaciones habituales, los medios de comunicación yen las respuestas que muchos profesionales de salud dan a sus pacientes cuando no pueden explicar síntomas variados que traen las personas afectadas a sus consultas. Se traslada el problema a la persona que lo sufre rotulándola como portadora de un trastorno o enfermedad psiquiátrica que le produce una suerte de vulnerabilidad y minusvalía ante las situaciones que le toca afrontar, sean emocionales, afectivas, físicas o laborales.

El diagnóstico queda así sujeto al criterio del profesional que interviene y a su subjetividad discrecional. En este Manual se proponen, en base a un gran número de pacientes estudiados de manera transdisciplinaria, formas explícitas de evidenciar el grado de estrés que padece una persona. Aplicando una correlación objetiva de la sintomatología clínica al momento de la consulta, relacionándola luego con los hallazgos en estudios neuropsicológicos y los análisis de laboratorio bioquímico se establece un diagnóstico racional y mas adecuado al cuadro. En la segunda parte del libro se examinan los fundamentos fisiopa tológicos de la sin toma tología, trastornos y enfermedades relacionadas con el estrés incluyéndolas dentro de la visión integral del ser humano que propone la Psicoinmunoneuroendocrinología clínica
