El mercado del transporte aéreo se ha caracterizado por un marco legal y regulatorio que ha variado mucho a lo largo del tiempo. Los elementos definitorios del mismo han cambiado, desde las profundas y rígidas restricciones y limitaciones iniciales a las compañías aéreas del siglo XX, hasta llegar más tarde a la fase llamada de 'mercados abiertos' y luego a la de 'cielos abiertos'. Sin embargo, esta progresiva liberalización dista de ser completa, y esta materia sigue siendo un tema de negociación entre los distintos países y bloques, ya que continúan generando controversia medidas restrictivas como la cláusula de nacionalidad, todavía un tema que enfrenta a EE.UU con la UE, o los métodos de asignación aeroportuaria europeos. En este libro, se pretende detallar con rigor histórico la evolución de la liberalización en el tiempo de la industria de la aviación, enumerar los principales temas pendientes y polémicos que aún no han sido liberalizados, y los principales argumentos a favor y en contra de estas cuestiones, analizando los distintos bandos al respecto y las posiciones de defensores y detractores de los sistemas actuales, así como posibles alternativas a los mismos y perspectivas a futuro. De igual forma, a fin de ilustrar con objetividad el proceso de liberalización, se prestarán atención a casos particulares de países donde la liberalización ha seguido un rumbo distinto o ha logrado efectos distintos a lo normal y frecuente, como son los casos de Australia, Chile o Japón. Por último, de nuevo para potenciar la objetividad del estudio y mantenerlo aséptico, y a fin de valorar los efectos de este proceso, se analizará el impacto económico y social que ha traído la liberalización sobre las personas.
