Le bi-/plurilinguisme est à la fois une composante et une manifestation de la diversification culturelle dans un monde globalisé . Il est aussi devenu un objectif largement reconnu de l'éducation. En tant que phénomène langagier, il bénéficie de la richesse des moyens d'investigation de la linguistique actuelle. En 2002, une révision approfondie de ce livre s'est efforcée de tenir compte à la fois de l'évolution du contexte socio-linguistique qui avait servi de cadre à l'étude, et de celle des outils théoriques disponibles. Les auteurs ont conservé l'esprit de la première édition; ils n'ont pas cherché à produire une encyclopédie du bilinguisme, mais proposé au lecteur un parcours d'observation et de réflexion à travers un terrain particulier - la région suisse de Neuchâtel - qui ancre la démarche dans un contexte socioculturel authentique. Pour cette nouvelle édition, les auteurs ont ajouté dans une postface les développements récents qu'ils jugent les plus pertinents. Ceux-ci enrichissent la réflexion théorique servant de moteur à ce parcours conduisant à des généralisations qui étendent la portée des observations initiales. Ils font de cet ouvrage un accompagnement à l'expérience pratique et réflexive du bi-/plurilinguisme qui concerne un très grand nombre de personnes en Europe et dans le monde.

Georges Lüdi (1943) est professeur émérite de linguistique française à l'Université de Bâle. Il a travaillé notamment sur les contacts de langues, l'acquisition de langues étrangères, la sémantique lexicale et le multilinguisme au travail. Il a présidé le groupe d'experts chargé d'élaborer un « Concept général pour l'enseignement des langues en Suisse » et co-dirigé le projet de recherche européen DYLAN.
Bernard Py (1939-2012) était professeur de linguistique appliquée à l'Université de Neuchâtel jusqu'à sa retraite en 2002. Il a travaillé notamment sur les contacts de langues, l'acquisition de langues étrangères, les représentations sociales du langage et la didactique des langues. Avant d'occuper un poste à l'Université, il a enseigné l'espagnol et le français dans diverses écoles secondaires.
