Elle a dogmatisé par la bouche de ses brahmanes, elle a chanté aussi les exploits de ses héros dans une langue savante et harmonieuse; mais tandis que tout se modifiait autour d'elle, ceux qui l'étudiaient à mille ans d'intervalle la retrouvaient dans la même attitude, livrée aux mêmes pensées. Entraînée par son génie rêveur et mystique dans les sphères de la philosophie abstraite, elle semble avoir perdu jusqu'au souvenir de sa propre existence; à qui l'interroge sur son histoire, elle répond par des récits fabuleux, par de merveilleuses légendes. Et pourtant l'Inde a vécu plus longtemps que tant d'autres nations qui paraissaient plus puissantes et plus fortement constituées. Le secret de sa durée et de sa force, il faut donc le chercher dans ses lois et dans son organisation sociale. Or, parmi les institutions qui lui sont propres, celle qui la caractérise le mieux, celle qui a le plus puissamment contribué à la maintenir stationnaire, mais toujours debout, c'est assurément le régime des castes..."
