Manches von dem, was wir heute in Europa als normal empfinden, haben sich unsere Mütter und Väter kaum vorstellen können. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes greifen die aktuelle Diskussion um die Euro- päische Währungsunion, den Euro und "Maastricht 11" auf und weisen zu- gleich darüber hinaus. Sie gehen zurück auf - teilweise überarbeitete und aktualisierte - Vorträge, die im Rahmen eines Europatages der Verwaltungs- fachhochschule Altenholz am 6. Mai 1997 gehalten wurden. Diese Veranstal- tung diente - wie es dem Selbstverständnis der Hochschule entspricht - dem Dialog zwischen Wissenschaft und Praktikern aus Verwaltungen, Unterneh- men und Verbänden. Davon profitieren beide Seiten und, so bleibt zu hoffen, auch die Leserinnen und Leser dieses Bandes. Die Beiträge machen zweierlei deutlich: Zum einen wird die einheitliche europäische Währung - so oder so - kommen, ein Zurück gibt es nicht mehr.
