Mit dem Putsch der Bolschewisten im Oktober 1917 greift im Russischen Reich erstmals die kommunistische Partei nach der Macht. Das Kalk�l Lenins und sp�ter Stalins, dass der revolution�re Funken der machthabenden Partei der Sowjetunion zur Umgestaltung der Gesellschaften sich in kurzer Zeit weiter auf Gesamteuropa ausbreiten werde, erf�llte sich jedoch nicht. In der Folge wurde das Instrument der Gleichschaltung von Moskau bis nach Wladiwostok als Form des staatlichen Terrors eingesetzt. Der sogenannte gro e Terror war in den Jahren 1937/1938 gepr�gt von sozialistischen Gewaltexzessen an mehr als zwei Millionen Menschen, die im sowjetischen Reich verhaftet, gefoltert und ermordet wurden. Diese Verbrechen wurden �ber Jahrzehnte tabuisiert. Die nachhaltigste Z�sur im kommunistischen System der Parteiherrschaft wurde ausgel�st durch den Tod Stalins 1953 und den darauffolgenden 20. Parteitag der Kommunistischen Partei der Sowjetunion (KPdSU). 1956 setzte Nikita Chruschtschow ein Signal des Wandels in einer f�nfst�ndigen Geheimrede �ber die Verbrechen Stalins. Im Ergebnis wollte die KPdSU so auf eine Entstalinisierung vorbereiten und Handlungsspielraum f�r eine vorsichtige Reformpolitik gewinnen. Damit er�ffneten sich innenpolitische M�glichkeiten f�r Vertreter von Demokratie und Freiheit, ihre Ziele �ffentlich zu formulieren - und der Weg f�r den Prager Fr�hling im Jahr 1968 war bereitet. Dieser Versuch der tschechoslowakischen kommunistischen Partei um Alexander Dubček, einen "Sozialismus mit menschlichem Antlitz" zu gestalten, endete mit seiner gewaltsamen Niederschlagung am 21. August 1968. Diejenigen, die diese Ereignisse miterlebt hatten, waren unter dem sowjetischen Regime zum Schweigen verurteilt - so wie Michal Reiman, ein Weggef�hrte Dubčeks, oder Tamara Reiman, die als Dolmetscherin an der Konferenz der sowjetischen und der tschechoslowakischen F�hrung teilnahm, die Ende Juli bis Anfang August 1968 in Černa a. d. Thie stattfand und die kommenden Ereignisse einleitete. Erstmals dokumentieren sie in diesem Band ihre Erlebnisse und machen sie so der Nachwelt zug�nglich. Erg�nzt werden die Zeitzeugenerz�hlungen um Analysen und Hintergrundberichte namhafter Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen.
