This book contains contributions from the third Commission on European Family Law (CEFL) conference which took place in Oslo in June 2007. The general topic, 'European Challenges in Contemporary Family Law, ' has been divided into five themes: The Harmonization of Family Law --- Children and Their Parents --- Irregular Marriages and the Influence of Multiculturalism --- (Property) Relations between Spouses and Cohabitants --- Cross-Border Family Relationships. These issues are, in different ways, related to the remarkable change in family life that has taken place in Europe in the last three or four decades. European family law has experienced, in a profound and deep way, social and demographic changes in this short period of time. Just a few of the important recent developments include: an explosion in the divorce rates and extramarital cohabitation and the resulting increase in the number of children born out of wedlock --- women joining the paid work force en masse, influencing, among other things, parental roles and property relations among partners --- new techniques in artificial insemination --- the growing social acceptance of same-sex relationships

About The Author

Katharina Boele-Woelki is Professor of Private International Law, Comparative Law and Family Law at Utrecht University, The Netherlands and Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape, South-Africa. Since 2001 she has been the chair of the Commission on European Family Law which was established upon her initiative. She is president of the Dutch Association of Family Law, member of the board of the Dutch Association of Comparative Law, and member of several editorial boards of Dutch and European and South-African law journals. She is also a member of various associations, such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerrecht as well as the Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Familienrecht. Since 2003 she has been one of the editors of the European Family Law Series. In 2007 she established the Utrecht Centre for European Research into Family Law (UCERF). She is a titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. She has organized prestigious international conferences, delivered numerous guest lectures at various universities around the world and has acted as a reporter, speaker, expert and panel member in many international conferences. In 2011 she has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala. In 2012 she has received the Anneliese Maier Forschungspreis of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung (Germany) for her work in the field of international and European family law. In 2013 she has been elected member of the International Advisory Board of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. In 2014 she had been elected President of the International Academy of Comparative Law. Since 2015 she is taking on a new position as president of the Bucerius Law School.

Professor dr. juris Tone Sverdrup has a Degree in Economics and Business Administration (NHH Bergen, Norway 1972) and a Master degree in Law (University of Oslo 1977). She was admitted to the bar in 1984. In 1997 she obtained her Doctoral degree in Law. Since 2000 she is Professor of Law at the University of Oslo. Her main fields of research are family law and property law. As author she wrote several books in family law, among others a monograph on co-ownership in marriage and unmarried cohabitation, and - together with professor Peter Lødrup - the text book on family law used in the Law Faculties in Norway. She also co-edited and co-founded Norway's leading journal on family law ("Tidsskrift for familierett, arverett og barnevernrettslige spørsmål", Gyldendal).In three periods (2006-2009) she was acting in the Supreme Court of Norway. She is member of the Expert group of the Commission on European Family Law (CEFL) and the Executive Council of the International Society of Family Law (ISFL), of the International Advisory Board for Child and Family Law Quarterly (England), of the Academia Europaea and of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
