The present work makes no pretensions to absolute accuracy, any more than to perfect finality. To produce a complete standard Grammar, especially for the first time, would involve the experience and labour of many years, or a lifetime. What is here attempted is a work, not of authoritative scholarship at all, but only of practical utility meanwhile. The author is himself but a learner, and as well for his own help as for the help of others — missionaries, tea-planters, or soldiers — who may have occasion to use the Nepdli language, he has thought it well to throw into book form and publish his private MS. notes. If for nothing else than to secure uniformity in orthography and construction in the translation of the Scriptures now in course, a step of the kind had become imperative. The book is divided into three parts. Part one consists of lessons in technical grammar, sentence making, and composition. Great care has been taken never to define a terra or to enunciate a principle without first preparing the mind of the pupil to grasp and comprehend the meaning and use of the term defined or the principle enunciated. Part II, Sentence making and composition are, it is believed, presented in a natural and attractive manner. Words are given for the pupil to use in sentences. At first, all the words are given; then, a part of them. Having acquired some facility in the construction of sentences, the pupil is next taught to use groups of words, phrases, and clauses, as single words. Part III is the punctuation. This book is very useful to acquire this language.

AW Cornelius was an author, translator, compiler and grammarian. He is mostly remembered for his outstanding contribution in history and literature. He is the author of European guide to Gurkhali or Nepali grammar.
