Euthyphro is a philosophical dialogue written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. The dialogue takes place in Athens, where Socrates meets Euthyphro, a young man who is prosecuting his own father for murder. The two engage in a conversation about the nature of piety and the relationship between the gods and morality. Euthyphro argues that piety is doing what the gods love, while Socrates challenges him to consider whether the gods love things because they are pious, or whether things are pious because the gods love them. The dialogue ultimately leaves the question of the nature of piety unresolved, but raises important philosophical questions about the relationship between morality and religion. Euthyphro is considered one of Plato's most important works and is often studied in philosophy courses as an example of Socratic dialogue and ethical inquiry.Euth. I am amused, Socrates, at your making a distinction between one who is a relation and one who is not a relation; for surely the pollution is the same in either case, if you knowingly associate with the murderer when you ought to clear yourself and him by proceeding against him. The real question is whether the murdered man has been justly slain. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
