Sie befindet sich zwischen einer Gleichnisrede (Mk 4,1-34) und einer Wundergeschichte (Mk 5,1-20) und ist in den Kontext des Evangeliums gut eingebunden, da der Verfasser eine gelungene Verbindung zu dem vorangehenden und dem nachfolgenden Geschehen geschaffen hat. Auffällig ist dies an der Wortwahl in 4,35f, da die Handlung direkt an die im Vorfeld bereits berichteten Ereignisse anknüpft. Die agierenden Personen werden bei dem Einstieg in das Geschehen lediglich mit 'er' und 'ihnen' benannt und erhalten im weiteren Verlauf des Textauszuges keine explizite Namenszuweisung. Bei einer näheren Betrachtung der vorangehenden Verse ist deutlich zu erkennen, dass mit 'ihnen' die Jünger und mit 'er' Jesus gemeint sind. Somit wird die Kenntnis ihrer Namen anhand des bereits ereigneten Geschehens vorausgesetzt. Im Vorfeld der Sturmstillungserzählung hatte Jesus am Ufer des Sees Genezareth zu lehren begonnen und der sich versammelnden Menschenmenge und den Jüngern in Gleichnissen gepredigt. Da die Anzahl seiner Zuhörer stieg, musste er sich in ein Boot stellen (Mk 4,1). Anhand der Angabe 'am Abend desselben Tages' (V. 35) und der Tatsache, dass die Jünger das Volk entlassen und mit Jesus so lossegeln 'wie er im Boote war' (V. 36), deutet ebenfalls darauf hin, dass der Tag und der Schauplatz der Gleichnisrede mit dem beschriebenen Tag und Schauplatz des Textauszuges in Mk 4,1 übereinstimmt. Die Geschichte endet mit einer Frage der Jünger, deren Beantwortung in Mk 8,29 bzw. Mk 15,39 erfolgt. Eine Verbindung zu der nachfolgenden Perikope von der Heilung eines besessenen Geraseners (Mk 5,1-20) vollzieht sich, indem an das zu Beginn erwähnte Vorhaben Jesu (V. 35), an das andere Ufer überzusiedeln, angeknüpft wird.
