Das Thema fand ich in meinemjungeren Arbeitskontext an der Philipps-Universiilit Marburg, in den u.a. die Erfahrungen vieler Jahre der Besehiiftigung mit Freizeitsozio- logie, ihrer Grenzen und Saekgassen, sowie das Interesse an der jungeren Diskussion uber neue Aspekte sozialer Ungleichheit und die Erweiterung wie integrative Fortset- zung dieser theoretisehen Tradition eingeflossen sind. Dem Bueh vorausgegangen sind, neben einigen programmatisehen Aufsatzen, zwei fUr die Femuniversitat Hagen ange- fertigte Kurseinheiten "Lebensstile: Praferenzpalette der Sozialstruktur". Ein Teil die- ses Textes wurde mit freundlieher Zustimmung der Femuniversitat ubemommen, an- dere Teile wurden wesentlich erganzt und uberarbeitet. EingefUgt wurde der Berieht uber eine eigene empirisehe Lebensstiluntersuehung aufgrund von Erhebungen an einer kleinen Stiehprobe. Friederike Benthaus danke ieh fUr die im Rahmen ihrer Diplomarbeit geleistete Mit- arbeit bei der Entwicklung und Erprobung des Fragebogens sowie fUr die DurehfUh- rung zahlreicher Interviews.
