My inspiration for this collection, Fairy Tales from Ancient China, comes from fond memories of my grandmother, who would tell us enchanting fairy tales and bedtime stories from India. Her tales brimmed with timeless lessons and beautiful imagery, which left a deep impression on me as a child. Years later, when I decided to write down the stories she told, I found myself captivated not only by the memories but by the process of researching them. It was through this journey that I stumbled upon equally enchanting tales from China and other cultures, rich with their own unique lessons and perspectives.
China, like India, has a vast oral storytelling tradition that dates back centuries, even to the days before colonial influence. Many of these tales were passed down by word of mouth, evolving with each telling, and I found myself encountering similar stories across other cultures. This makes it challenging to pinpoint a definitive source, as each story adapts itself to the culture and time in which it is told. Nevertheless, these tales share an enduring quality and a moral heart, providing guidance and reflection for listeners of all ages.
Unlike some tales that may promote a particular nationality or religious perspective, Chinese fairy tales often adopt a neutral tone. This reflects the cultural emphasis on harmony and shared values, making them accessible and relatable to people of all beliefs. Where these tales include references to God or deities, they generally refer to a universal figure rather than any specific one, allowing young readers from diverse backgrounds to find resonance and connection in them. Similarly, when stories mention societal ranks or occupations, I have adapted them to English equivalents or provided a brief explanation to aid understanding.
While preparing these stories for a modern audience, I took care to soften certain themes that might be unsettling for today's readers. Traditional fairy tales often feature villains who receive harsh punishments, a reflection of the values and justice of their time. In adapting these tales, I have aimed to retain their moral core while ensuring they are suitable for young readers aged 4 to 12.
Whether you are a young scholar learning to read or a parent sharing these tales at bedtime, I hope these stories offer a glimpse into a distant, fascinating world. As our world changes and modernises, let us cherish these wise old stories, remembering the guidance and warmth our ancestors offered by the fireside or at home. Through these pages, may you find a piece of that magic and wisdom to share with your own budding genius.
