Das geschieht in einem Sozialisationsprozess, da Eltern ihrem Kind am Anfang als Modelle für die Nachahmung dienen. Durch ihre Beziehungen zueinander und zum Kind selbst prägen sie dessen Persönlichkeit und beeinflussen seine Einstellungen, Wertvorstellungen und Verhaltensweisen. Von der Art und Weise, wie in der Familie Gefühle und Gedanken ausgetauscht werden und welche Formen der Kooperation und Konfliktregelung dominieren, hängt es ab, ob sie das Kind zu einem Menschen erziehen, der zu unabhängigem Handeln, Entscheiden und Urteilen fähig ist, oder zu einer autoritätsabhängigen, unselbstständigen und gehorsamen Person und dadurch seine Sozialisation gefährden. Familiäre Gewalt als einer der wichtigsten Störfaktoren der kindlichen Sozialisation bringt auch weitere negative Folgen für die kindliche Entwicklung mit sich.
