Doch wofür steht der Begriff der Familie tatsächlich? Und hat diese wirklich einen erheblichen Einfluss auf den Charakter eines Menschen und seine Entwicklung? Wie ist ihre Bedeutung heute? In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird diese Thematik näher beleuchtet und mit Hilfe der Theorie Erich Fromms die Bedeutung der Familie für die Erziehung und die Gesellschaft herausgearbeitet. Diese kleine, aber sehr intensive Lebensgemeinschaft, gehört in Deutschland für vierzig Prozent der Bevölkerung zum Leben dazu. Nicht immer ist es die klassische bürgerliche Familie mit einem Ehepaar und einem oder mehrere Kinder. Es setzten sich auch Formen wie z.B. Patchwork-Familien oder gleichgeschlechtliche Lebensgemeinschaften mit Kindern durch. Nach Familienforschungen wei t der Begriff der Familie im sozialwissenschaftlichen Bereich drei verschiedene Merkmale auf. Das erste ist die "biologische und soziale Doppelnatur". Dies bezieht sich auf die gesellschaftliche Integration der Kinder im sozialen Bereich auf der einen Seite und auf die Reproduktion des Menschen im biologischen Sinn auf der anderen Seite. Weiterhin ist eine Familie daran zu erkennen, dass innerhalb dieses Verhältnisses eine ganz klare und einmalige Rolle für jedes Mitglied existiert. Diese Rollen innerhalb der Familien weisen eine rege Kooperation und Solidarität auf. Ein letztes und entscheidendes Merkmal einer Familie ist der Unterschied der Generationen. Eine solche Differenz ist in jeder Familie vorhanden. Auch bei alleinerziehenden Müttern und Vätern ist dies zu beobachten.
