Scheidungen gehören für viele Menschen zu Lebenswirklichkeit, gerade deshalb ist dieses Thema von so hoher Wichtigkeit und Aktualität. Mögliche Gründe für die Zunahme der Scheidungszahlen wurden in zahlreichen Studien erörtert. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es herauszuarbeiten, ob die Institution Ehe für die Gesellschaft tatsächlich an Bedeutung verloren hat und inwiefern der Wertewandel sich auch auf den Wandel der Familienstrukturen auswirkt. Zu Beginn wir der Begriff "Familie" nach dem heutigen Verständnis definiert. Anschlie end wird der Wandel der Familie im historischen Gesamtkontext betrachtet, um für die genaueren Untersuchungen der Instabilität der modernen Ehe ein Fundament zu schaffen. In der vertieften Auseinandersetzung mit möglichen Scheidungsursachen, werden mehrere Theorien, wie z. B. die "Scheidungsspirale" nach Diekmann und Engelhardt, in den Fokus der Untersuchung gerückt, um Scheidungsbegünstigende Faktoren genauer definieren zu können. Abschlie end werden theoretische Voraussetzungen für eine zukunftsfähige Ehe beschrieben.
