The collection starts with a discussion of pregnant and lactating mares, followed by details on foal development, nutritional requirements, and feeding practices under different conditions. Special sections on young horses in training, parasite control as well as on health risks related to nutrition and exercise round off this unique and easy-to-read reference.

Today's horses perform variety of roles and there are many categories of horses based on their breed, size and use, making adequate nutrition challenging. This book considers the links between health, proper dietary treatment and management practices to increase our understanding of the needs of growing horses. In addition, it highlights various innovations in equine nutrition and management to ensure animal wellbeing.

Veterinarians, animal nutritionist, and all stakeholders and people working in the horse industry will benefit from the presented knowledge. This book fills a literature gap to prevent health consequences and strengthen performance and physical development in equines.

About The Author

Markku Saastamoinen, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, graduated at the University of Helsinki in Animal Science (animal nutrition and animal genetics). He published his doctorial thesis on 'Genetic and Environmental Parameter for Measures of Racing Performance in Standardbred and Finnhorse Trotters' at the University of Helsinki. Markku is currently working as a senior scientist in Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) on several topics related to horses and horse production, and as a lecturer in equine nutrition and management at the University of Helsinki. He has published scientific and popular publications on equine nutrition, genetics, management, exercise physiology, and equine economy, and edited textbooks on equine nutrition. He has held several national and European positions in scientific and horse organizations and committees and has been president of the Equine Workshop on Equine Nutrition (EWEN) as well as a secretary and vice president of the Horse Commission ofthe European Association of Animal Science (EAAP).
