Die meisten mittelalterlichen Dokumente aus Italien wurden von Notaren geschrieben. Diese Studie stellt daher die Produzenten dieser Schriftquellen ins Zentrum. Im Gegensatz zur bisherigen Forschung, welche die Geschichte des Notariats jeweils nur für eine Stadt nachzeichnete und die urkundliche Überlieferung blo am Rande beizog, werden hier erstmals die Entwicklungslinien in allen Teilen des Regnum Italiae aufgezeigt und das vorhandene normative und dokumentarische Quellenmaterial in seiner ganzen Breite verwendet. Aus dieser Perspektive lösen die Toskana und besonders Lucca Genua und Bologna als Wegbereiter ab. Au erdem werden die Urkundenschreiber selber, ihre Persönlichkeit und ihr Lebenshorizont einbezogen.

Das Aufkommen der Imbreviaturbücher im frühen 12. Jahrhundert revolutionierte das bisherige Dokumentationssystem. Denn fortan schrieb der Notar die Urkunden nicht nur, er bewahrte sie für seine Zeitgenossen auch gleich noch auf. Die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit notariellen Akten sollte sich nicht auf die engere Quellenkritik oder auf die inhaltliche Analyse der Dokumente beschränken, sondern auch zu weiterreichenden methodischen Fragen anregen. Denn die zweifache Überlieferung durch Imbreviaturbücher und Pergamenturkunden stellt für den Historiker eine äu erst interessante Konstellation dar. Die Brisanz liegt vor allem darin, da der Vergleich der beiden Traditionswege relativ präzise erkennen lä t, welcher Anteil der einstigen Menge heute noch vorliegt und wieviel in der Zwischenzeit verloren gegangen ist. Erstmals wird hier eine vollständige Sammlung von Notarszeichen präsentiert, welche die damalige regionalen und modischen Einflüssen unterworfene Ornamentik illustriert.
