What does it mean to truly see another person?

Fellow Human Beings is a collection of deeply human stories drawn from years of walking alongside people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, trauma, and profound vulnerability. These are not case studies or clinical success stories. They are lives-messy, resilient, and contradictory.

Through the journeys of real people facing serious challenges, this book explores what happens at the intersection of care, power, dignity, and love. It asks hard questions about systems meant to help-and about the people who work within them-while never losing sight of the individuals at the center.

Fellow Human Beings challenges us to look beyond diagnoses and behaviors and to encounter people as they are: complex, wounded, hopeful, and worthy of belonging.

Bruce Davis has dedicated more than 38 years to working alongside his Fellow Human Beings-- individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health needs. His career has spanned roles in state government, clinical leadership, and national advocacy. Bruce is a longtime board member of the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD), where he has served as both treasurer and president. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he received the William I. Gardner Award from the Center for START Services-- one of the highest honors in the field of dual diagnosis. He is also the creator and host of the Clinical Consultation Network, a weekly podcast that brings together professionals and thought leaders to discuss best practices and emerging issues in the field. Bruce lives in Tennessee with his wife, Lori, and enjoys time with his dog, Bear, and riding his horse, Ojos. He continues to advocate for dignity, inclusion, and understanding for all people.
